Laptop Battery Declining, Replacement Fun

My trusty laptop has worked flawlessly for many years, but in the last few weeks the battery has steeply declined to hold a charge, and discharges rapidly, especially as it reaches 30%.

The laptop is great, so i thought i'd order a replacement battery. A friend gave me the name of a company that sells batteries that are about one-third cheaper than the OEM batteries. I thought i'd give it a go.

Battery arrives, and, upon inspection, one of the mounting clips has broken. I thought, not to worry, it's still got all the others. The specification on the label matches the old device, so I go ahead and remove the old battery. It was relatively easy to remove. The old battery is exactly 6-years old, so it's done well, imho.

Placing the new battery in position, I notice that two of the screw mounting points aren't quite right, and are about 2mm out of position. This means three mounting points are not going to work. I also notice that beside each screw mounting point there is a hole which should sit over a spigot on the chassis. I can get one to fit, but the other required a slight forcing into position. The screw mounting points don't seem 100% solid, which meant I was able to make that tweak.

I also noticed the new battery is slightly lighter in weight, although, i'm aware that battery technology has improved over the years, i'm hopeful it's the improvement, and not a sub-standard battery.

OK, well, I know what you're thinking, I should have paid the extra for the OEM version.

The battery is currently under test and i'll have to wait until the calibration is finished to make sure it's a good one.

Hope it works out ok. In a similar position with my laptop battery. I really need to plug mine in if I intend to use it for ant more than 10 mins. A very degraded battery.

Yup, that's about it with this one, too. It suddenly reaches about 30% then the laptop hibernates. In effect, it has to be plugged in all the time to avoid the frustration of the, "battery to low, plug in now" message and it hibernating. That battery message comes up on the screen and, almost instantly it hibernates. There is no time to get the charge lead plug in.

If it's a decent laptop, i'd suggest getting an OEM replacement, and not doing what i've done.

A problem that is not unique to laptops, certainly. I recently had to get a new cordless drill because the old one could be recharging all night and still utter nothing more than a feeble putt ... putt ... putt--just about adequate for driving wood screws into 1/8" balsa.

Curiously I also recently replaced a Toshiba laptop battery. 6 Cell Battery for Toshiba PA3356U-1BAS - yes I received an excellent price as well. Cost including express postage $A35.69

I purchased mine on eBay and paid with PayPal - if it doesn't work it goes back for a guaranteed refund. Why I have used them all these years.

My battery is 100% good.

That's always been a problem with LiPo batteries. They do not like being left in a discharged state for an extended period of time. The same issue is well known with Drones. Regular duty cycles are the only way to prevent battery damage. Lipos that are left in a degraded state also post a fire risk.

Update: The new battery has retained its charge, and i've not yet had to recharge it, although i'm not using it to a huge extent right now. It's way better than the old one, and if it lasts another six years I think i would have had good value from the laptop. I haven't even checked to see if it's capable of running win 11.

The battery calibration software doesn't seem to want to work, and i really cannot be bothered with the challenging error message reporting that the HP software demands.

BTW, this is a Li-ion battery.

The main thing is it appears i'll no longer be caught short in the middle of a project by the sudden hibernation.
