Worlds Cheapest Laptop Now Available

A company is now selling what it calls the "world's cheapest laptop," which at $130, is not a bad deal if you can bear some hardware limitations.
The Impulse NPX-9000 laptop has a 7-inch screen and comes with the Linux OS. It has a 400MHz processor, 128M bytes of RAM, 1G byte of flash storage and an optional wireless networking dongle. It includes office productivity software, a Web browser and multimedia software.

There is always a catch with these things. The trend of lowering PC costs is starting to be more popular. I wonder if anyone will even buy these PCs in bulk like this, though.

Isn't this trend the result of a program aimed at getting computers into the hands of underprivileged children in "third world" countries? I can't remember the name of the program (or cause) though.

So you are correct, however, this isn't the same thing exactly.

These laptops may also be interesting for students who don't want to invest since they already have a desktop at home, but appreciate to have one in class.

So many students have dual core/2GB laptops and just use office... (ok I am talking about serious students, no the ones who browsed the net, play games during classes :) )

They're turning into calculators. thinking about getting a couple of the EEE's. One for the kids instead of their desktop and one for me for surfing in the evenings. it'd let me get some work done at night when spouse and I are parked in front of the tv.

Hey, I can remember when I didn't see a need for a computer at home. these things can still take off. (I can also remember not seeing any business application to the idea of having multiple computers connected remotely).
