It could be a problem with the drive itself, or perhaps more likely with the discs you're using. Have you tried a few different discs?

I've found with some drives, tiny variations like the weight of the disc can cause problems.

if its the drives i'll be happy, but these drives are failing to read any burnt dvd, so anything i've archived onto disk i can't get back.

like i said my primary is just dead, it'll falsely read a disk as a cd with no contents.

my secondary will read blank dvd's, burn them, but once burned won't read them. but it will read cdr's won't read dvd movies (legit copies) so i am hoping its the dvd drives.

and not the ide controller.

If the disks verified after burning (and have been stored away from heat/sunlight, etc.) then they should be ok.

It seems odd that two drives should fail simultaneously. Could it be a software issue?

the disks are fine, the issue is two things.

1, the one drive that recognises nothing went slowly and well its dead.
2,
a) TSST SH-S182D - Has a lead in error that makes the lead in too far in, but my dvd player can read the disks and other peoples pc's
b) it will read all dvd's except dvdr's tested only on dvd -r as thats all i have, it will read them blank until they contain information.

i've ordered a new dvd r drive to replace the dead drive. but the TSST drive was purchased not too long ago, so if it can be salvaged i'd perfer to do that.

so any ideas why its being a pain? the new drive should be here tomorrow, so i will be able to see if its the drive or the controller.

I had this issue on my Dell using Nero. As soon as I tried another software program it worked first time. As kaled mentioned, might be a software issue.

Thanks for all the replies, drive one that couldn't read a single dvd, i replaced with a new burner which is working perfectly.

drive 2 the one that can burn but not read. its not exactly a software issue, part of the issue is the firmware i reflashed the drive, as its lead it was way too far in. and it was suspected thats why that drive couldn't read them. my other drive (new one) is capable. i will get some other software and test to see if that helps as well. it still can't read in disks that are dvd-r's.

if i can't find away to get it to work i'll purchase another drive i can't complain £13 for a useable drive. hell 50 dvd-r's(G05 dye) are now £5, i love it when things are cheap :o)
