Now Blu-ray Has Won The Format War, Will You Buy

Now the format war appears over [webmasterworld.com], for the time being, will you acquire a Blu-ray device?

I have a standard DVD recorder, and I have no plans to change it for at least a few years. It has 1080P upscaling, but we don't own a TV capable of displaying 1080P. Until our current TVs pack up, I have no plans to update as they work just fine.

All PCs here use DVD recorders, and they work just fine.

I rarely rent movies, so no worries on that front. If I did, there's no way I will buy a Blu-ray player for today's prices.

I guess it will be the lack of availablity of DVD movies, disks and drives that will force me to upgrade. However, they are going to have to come down in price a long way.

What about you?

Well I don't have a HD ready TV, so a blu-ray player would not be much use to me at the moment...as I understand it.

I have a 24 inch widscreen in the lounge which has a great picture and works just fine. The room itself isn't that big so a huge LCD TV is not really an option, so for now I am not going high-def.

I did what I did back when dvds came out, bought a game system that played both games and dvd's. I bought an Xbox when they first came out because it gave us "two birds with one stone", a games system and a dvd player. This year I bought a play station 3 for the kids, it also plays blueray disc's, problem solved ;~)

I saw an article in the paper (yeah, offline information- sorry :)) today that suggested Blu-ray players had been cheaper because of the war with HD-DVD, and that now prices are expected to rise, especially coupled with expected demand as a lot of people had been waiting on the sidelines waiting to see who won the war.

My parents got a Blu-ray player a few weekends ago and we went up to check it out. Definitely VERY nice! But some things you don't really want that much detail (like close-ups of actors' faces). We watched "The Patriot" (the Blu-ray version had additional scenes from the version I'd previously seen) and some of the gore was bit too clear this time. :)

For us, we can't justify the exepnse- would have to buy a new TV to really take advantage of it (just paid off the current one a few months ago). When next we buy a TV, will probably consider a "full" upgrade to a Blu-ray player and HD Tivo.

Or at least hold steady for the ones currently on the market.

One of the nice things about the HD-DVD players was they were basically final spec; the higher-end Toshibas already included additional codecs and an Ethernet port for firmware upgrades, additional content and future movie download capability.

Comparable Blu-ray "Profile 2" players were due early 2008, now probably Spring. I'm guessing they'll come in at price points a bit above the current generation, then drop as the older inventory is worked through.

Until then the 1080P upconverting from my $60 player is almost as good; recently watched Lawrence of Arabia and was blown away by the quality. I'll probably hold off on getting a Blu-ray unit until the Profile 2 units are down to a reasonable price.
