intel board. 4 slots for memory.

currently running 2gig of dual channel memory (2 sticks of 1gig memory).
bought 2 more gig thinking it would just drop right in the other 2 slots.

symptom:
- install 2 more dimms and - system won't even come up to config screen.
- swapping memory around doesn't matter (all memory is good and each works in the 2stick=2gig mode.
- install just a 3rd stick in the first slot and system recognizes 3 gig no problem, but defaults to single channel mode.

Any hints? Am I trying a config that just wont work? The docs on the motherboard are just flat out incomprehensible.

If I am stuck in this mode - which is better 3gig of single channel, or 2 gig of dual channel?

I can give you a few pointers, but hard to say exactly what the problem might be.

1) Are the modules identical; same brand and speed? Some modules of different brands can have problems working side by side.

2) Is there any RAM limit on your motherboard? In that case how high is it?

3) A stupid answer perhaps, but check that the modules are seated correctly in their slots.

Hard to figure out, you will loose performance since you switch to a single channel, but you will also get more memory. Dual channel is generally faster.

Good Luck!

Run the system under the usual load you expect it to handle and check if it's swapping with 2G. If not, stick with 2.
Also, check the read buffer vs actual disk reads. If I/O load is not too high then stick with 2.

If the box either keeps swapping or does too much read I/O then the additional G might help, even if the total 3G is slower.

I take its a PC?

NT/XP doesn't realy handle memory over 2G's you can run SQLserver in a special mode that uses more.

try taking the working memory out and put the new pair in and see if you can get it to recongnise them - you may had dead memeory.

yep

SP2 has issues, you can back down to SP1 and maybe access the memory or try a linux live CD to make sure it's hardware related.
