Discussion among forum members wether websites still matter or not (2020), a time when so many people use FB, Pinterest, Wix, Wordpress (the free site), etc, would be an interesting conversation, specially because many of us around here used to (or still) build websites for clients, and I mean hosting + design, optimization, etc. Is that absolutely forgotten? BTW, there is a not so old thread where a forum member asks if building websites is still worth it.

Why paying someone and then wait, when you can do it yourself? for free?

- Is that necessary?
- What are the benefits?
- After all (webmaster knowledge, SEO and getting first page results is not so easy anymore)
- By easy I mean predictable, things seem upside down nowadays
- You would be paying for a dormant website after all... advertising sounds better
- etc.

It's easy for me to think about such discussion on the forum being quite... predictable, the usual and PROBABLY boring due to diff factors. But... reading some average people advice on the web (forums) brought new light, specially people I'm familiar with.

They are missing so much opportunities, they are taking the wrong approach and strategy and underestimate the power of a website built by a professional, after all it's not just the .com and some pics along some text, it's a craft, something that can push a business to the next level. Some of us are aware of this because we have seen it, we made it happen, and in some cases we built some stuff for ourselves providing proof that it can be done (in some cases easier than others). The wording and attitude on some conversations lighted a spark of the old times and how interesting it would be to let people see the benefits of a work well done, yes, even working along social media but everything with the help of a professional webmaster, not some average people suggesting free services and some average pictures.

Hello,

I still prefer to run my own site, than relying to third parties platforms, which can change the rules of the game anytime.

On other words, I guess I just got excited to hear some poorly written questions by average people on websites, and I thought about the many things they are missing, missing opportunities, potential businesses, profit improvement. It's easier to see this when one has experienced the difference (being a webmaster and having built sites for yourself in the sense that you got a direct benefit from your work, as in "it works!", instead of people being salesmen).

The web has changed a lot, and I have felt the weight and ended avoiding some work areas as a personal choice. But a lot of people are missing opportunities just because they don't understand what a webmaster can really bring to the game (me? I'm not interested on selling something to them, not anymore).

@JorgeV, yes, I feel that way 100%. I have felt the hit of those platform changes.
