The abacus-shufflers of analyst firm IDC have revised their 2016 PC sales forecasts downwards.

The firm now says PC shipments “... are forecast to decline by 7.3% year over year”. That's “roughly two per cent below earlier projections as conditions have been weaker than expected.” The firm names “weak currencies, depressed commodity prices, political uncertainty, and delayed projects” as the weaker conditions impacting sales.

Windows 10 isn't helping matters either, because lots of people are availing themselves of free Windows 10 upgrades rather than buying a new PC. The firm also says that “while a large share of enterprises are evaluating Windows 10, the pace of new PC purchases has not yet stabilized commercial PC shipments.” Which sounds like plenty of organisations just aren't pulling the upgrade trigger fast enough to give the PC market a kick.

Might be one reason why there's some good deals on high end units right now. :)

Hardware is simply lasting longer and there's no real impetus on the hardware front to replace what works. Windows 10 may have given some older hardware a new lease on life, so the title of the article comes across as a bit more negative than I think it should.

On the workstation side, I do think the more conservative enterprise market sees wisdom in waiting until Win10 has had some time to work the bugs out. As they have in the past, big business often waits until after the first Service Pack release on a Windows release before considering wide adoption.

Once upon a time frequent upgrades were necessary to keep pace with ever expanding memory demands by programs. The hardware guys have finally got ahead of the game on this. As a fashion item computers have been replaced by smart phones so they get replaced when they need to be replaced.
