Hello,
this is my first post although I have been lurking and searching and I see lots of equations but no solid answer.
Here is my situation, I am a self taught webmaster and I have designed several sites but now that my designs are out there I am getting requests for quotes to build new sites for a lawyer, a custom bike building (motorcycle) site and a few others.

My question is how do you go about pricing?

Here is my situation:
I want to build up my portfolio there for I want to get a few sites under my belt. The currant site I need to come up with a price for is a custom bike building shop here in Massachusetts, USA.

My client's site requirements are:
Fixed width site consisting of HTML, CSS, JAVASCRIPTS
phpBB3 forum with a custom theme
Possible Wordpress blog
There will be NO SSL or e-commences

I would like to quote one set price with a contingency clause
for overruns or if my client wants a custom logo designed. I also
want to include a monthly fee for hosting, updates, forum blog ect.

The site will be a basic html/css, no flash ect.
If anyone can give me an idea on pricing I would be very grateful!
Thanks

Welcome aboard Webwagon, no one can do this for you. It may take one developer 5 hours, another 100 hours; one may charge $50, another $1500. You have to consider how good you are at all those technologies (and add PHP to them too, phpBB and W.P. are both PHP based) and estimate how long it will take you.

Then multiply that by 3 (three) and you might get close and actually make a little money. I'm not kidding . . . the 3X rule actually plays out pretty closely for experienced developers.

I use 3 and 3.5 (the latter is the difference for overrun)... but YOU need to know your abilities and estimate time correctly. Screw up on your end and you're stuck with your quote.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your input. I guess my biggest worry is to undercharge and cut my own throat or overcharge and not get the job or never get any repeat customers! I'm sure this business is like any other where word of mouth can be your best friend or your worst enemy!

I guess I'm doing something right because I have been getting a steady increase in requests for new work based solely on my currant websites. I began playing with webdesign shortly after Ebay first started jacking their fees and I decided why share my profits with them! My first few website were crude to say the least but with perseverance my sites steadily improved. What started as a sideline suddenly changed after a serious back injury and failed surgery all I have left is my laptops because the disability checks from the government are a joke!

One thing I have against me is speed, it may take me longer sometimes but I don't like things done halfassed! From the beginning I was coding from scratch. I have never used a "drag & drop" editor and only recently I have started learning Wordpress! I'm hoping by taking on a few easy jobs I can build my portfolio along with experience while hopefully making some money instead of giving it away, sometimes I'm too kindhearted for my own good.

Thanks again, there looks to be a wealth of knowledge here so I'll be searching and learning but I'm sure I'll be asking more questions in the future.

Best of luck in all! (Meanwhile ... and we don't usually do this because English is not everyone's language... you mean "current" as in recent/now/present instead of currant a vegetable) Mentioned only in that if you are seeking business, presentation and word use in same is important. If working on an entertainment site, for example, there's a difference between "Currant Events" and "Current Events"!

Thanks for the correction tangor, it's not the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last. Making an error in something like this is one thing but if this happens (and it has) when creating a website it can be embarrassing not to mention that it make me look very unprofessional!

Have a super weekend
