Ok you've seen a site and you think its rubbish

and you can do much better...what do you do?

Hi all,

Just this minute got a leaflet through the door advertising some Theatre and I decided to take a look at their website out of interest - as I'm a freelance web designer/developer.

I think its looks amateur, its built entirely in Flash (which I'm not a fan of, Flash has its place, but its not for building complete websites imo), and just not very good.

How do you approach this company saying you can do a better job?

Phone them? Email them? Go and visit them?

Either way, what sort of things do you say, how do you say them, and ultimatly, how do you get business out of them? What kind of attitude works in these situations?

Any suggestions, thoughts, or previous experience stories would be great to hear.

Most of these sites are built by the owner, or someone who offers it for free, or . . . pick your nepotism. You'll have long conversations that will do little more than eat up your time and be rewarded with patronism and no response. They might even act like they'll call you
"when it's in their budget." Trust me, the call will never come.

Best think to do? Chalk it up to one more thing you'll never do on a web site and walk away, find the clients that value your opinion. If they ever wise up they will come looking for you.

if it's really that bad why not build your own and figure out how to monetize it? do a good job and it's likely that you could sell it as a valuable asset and there's a lot more money in that than trying to pitch services to someone who does not know/think they need your service.

Offer to build a mobile site. Then you can talk to them about the flash site.

I dunno, but calling on the 800 line is probably not a good idea. Try sending a letter.

Will give them a call and ask them about it, but I dont think, now I've thought it over and asked a few others, that its probably going to lead to much.
