I'd like to find out more about how computer security works and how hackers do their dirty work. But I don't know where to start.

Help!

if you are using the term 'hacking' to mean breaking into computers and networks, then IMHO there is no such thing as ethical hacking!

"Ethical" hacking, I assume, refers to professionals who are employed to test system security.

Maybe I've used the wrong words. That does seem like a contradiction in terms.

What I mean is creating and testing security systems.

Help!

Ah. You got the title changed. :-) Here's a good potential source. There is a community version, but make sure you're sitting and aren't sipping coffee for the cost of the full version.

The Metasploit Project [metasploit.com]

A second way, but will still run you $700/year (maybe you can cut a deal as a developer, haven't tried) is to get scans from Security Metrics. I "back door" this one, clients that need this type of protection usually process credit cards, so their processor gateway usually foots the bill for the scans.
