Received a telephone call today and the caller asked for me by name. I confirmed it was me. She then proceeded to inform me there was a serious problem with my computer. I sounded shocked and asked her to explain.

I was told there was a piece of malicious software that had been installed without my knowledge, but they where able to remove it. All I had to do was visit a website and it would then prompt me to allow them access to my system.

I asked how they were able to find out about the problem. I was told that because they where a service provider the system would automatically inform Microsoft of any serous problems. I then asked how much and was told there would be a one off charge of £54 to resolve the problems.

I thought about it for a moment then said...

1. I run Ubuntu Linux
2. The data protection act does not allow you to obtain any information from my system
3. You are in no way affiliated with Microsoft
4. I will not be giving you a penny.

This is something that could catch out a lot of people.
