Why do websites rarely offer a "Bookmark This" link nowadays?

Hi Guys

I remember a few years ago most websites had a Bookmark this site option.

But lately I do not seem to see it very often.

Surely it is a good idea to make it easy for people to do this, as after all we want them to come back !

Is it no longer on many websites because webmasters think people will bookmark sites themselves using their favourite browser ?
Or is it because it it is harder with two major browsers IE and Firefox both having different names for the same thing ? and different technical requirements ?

What do you think ?

Easy access to effective search engines killed bookmarks.

Those who use bookmarks know that all they need to do is hit Ctrl-D.

Those who don't know about bookmarks happily use search, or simply type a URL like "google.com" into their Google toolbar search box to get to their favorite search engine. :)

Gee I didn't know about Ctrl-D

That's very intuitive

But I take your point

Ctrl-B -a bit more intuitive- works in Mozilla, but isn't as widely-supported as Ctrl-D.

There are several useful resources for browser-specific or widely-supported bookmarks, easy enough to find: [google.com...]

The problem is that most folks don't even know about keyboard shortcuts, or use any methods other than 'clicking.'

many sites use the Addthis script or similar to bookmark, add to facebook, email a friend - - all in one little widget.

I put a bookmark script on my first site in my novice days but soon formed the opinion that as a feature they looked spammy and unprofessional.

1.cause almost everyone now knows how to bookmark or save a page.
2.they share the links immediately using facebook, email and ...and dont need to bookmark anymore. sometimes the link is saved using those sharing tools mentioned.
3.they can access what they want via search engines
4.people are too busy twittering, facebooking where they dont care about old pages. Once shared they move on.

If you right-click a link or page, you can bookmark it (in Firefox) so why use javascript to do something that is already easy?

On the other hand, if you look towards the bottom of the page on any story on the BBC news website you will find "Bookmark with: Delicious, Digg, reddit, Facebook, StumbleUpon" and also "email this to a friend".

Also, whilst I avoid toolbars like the plague, I guess this sort of functionality has been added to these too.
