Possible keyword hack on my site

My keywords are wrong in Keyword Tool

Hello all. Here's my issue.

I just so happened to be using the Keyword Tool (generating via Web Content) and it brings up keywords that aren't even related to my site. My site is for cars and it brings up keywords for "pc maintenance" and "new york performance arts". Those things have absolutely NOTHING to do with my site.

Come to think of it, that's why my AdSense ads were funky. Instead of serving ads relating to cars, my AdSense ads were bringing up ads for "e-mail" and "smtp".

This was not always so and I have no idea why this is happening now. I believe my site has been hacked, but not sure how to even tell or where I would check. Could it have something to do with AdSense or something? This is a Joomla website by the way.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld wjnesbitt.

To begin with take a look at the source of your pages and see if there's anything amiss there.

Maybe it could have to do with the introduction of interest based ads:

Thanks for the welcome, Bill!
I've checked the source, but don't see anything that could be off.

Jecasc, I thought that this issue might be related to interest-based ads, however, I get the same Adsense ads regardless of what computer I (or anyone else) am on. Plus, with the keyword tool not recognizing my keywords and replacing them with others, I think it's something else.

Any suggestions? This is wreaking havoc on my Adsense and keywords.

welcome to W-World wjnesbitt.

Patience is key, this type of thing doesn't last very long and is often the result of "not enough data" having been gathered yet. Give Google a chance to make a few more passes and you'll see improvement.

I'm not sure if it works anymore but I remember working on one of my sites a couple of years ago, offline and on my computer only. I added adsense to a page on my desktop before uploading and when I took a look it was showing ads related to the files on my desktop. I think adsense can read a file name too, an offline page called lawyer.html will result in legal ads... offline. Creepy huh?

Thanks for welcoming me to the forum, JS_Harris....and for the info!

It's possible that the ads and keywords could be generating from the file names. The only thing is that when I first launched the site, the ads were fine. I was getting ads that were relevant to the site...automotive ads.

Another thing is that I changed some of the page names and links to see if that would help. It did...but only for one day...then it was back to the irrelevant ads and keywords.

If it's the file names, how can I fix it?

welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com], wjnesbitt!

there are lots of weird things that can happen with co-occurrence and relevance.
is it possible that there are brand names or other terms on those pages that could be relevant due to other meanings or usage?

i would also look at this with respect to pages you are internally linking, inbound links, anchor text, etc.
