Top Ranking in Google but how to use it

I have several keywords which are top (number one or two) in Google. "buy widgets" "buy wotnots" etc. Great news except I don't sell widgets or wotnots, I just write about them. These are commonly bought items and reasonably high value, £15 to £25 an item.

The Adsense earnings from these pages is good but I want to monetise the popularity of those pages better. The obvious solution is to place affiliate ads and text links on the pages, text links work well for me. But the problem is the industry I'm in. There are two main companies signed up to affiliate schemes that sell the widgets and wotnots but they lack any range. They sell red widgets and blue widgets but not the other 12 coloured widgets that are available.

The smaller companies do sell the full range but they aren't signed up to affiliate schemes. I have approached a couple and can't persuade them to sign up.

How can I advertise for these companies on my pages and earn some money from it?

I am talking to an excellent company at the moment and they are willing to work on a CPC basis. They have the stats monitoring to prove how many clicks there are to their site. But neither of us have the ability to identify what happens when I drive traffic to their site. Neither of us know if anyone buys anything and if so what the value is.

Any ideas? A donation to WebmasterWorld will be on its way if anyone comes up with a workeable idea!

Could you sell the widgets yourself?

As a search marketer myself, I would have already approached you if you were in my niche. Depending on the amount of traffic you will send and the size of their business, they are idiots if they turn you away!

I'd find the best site, even if you have already been denied by them. Ask for their VP of sales/marketing (or both) and let them know that you have excellent traffic and sales for them and that you will work on a commissioned basis. If they decline, simply tell them that you will approach their top compeitior and offer the same deal to them.

Likewise, you could approach a smaller company in this niche and say that you can help them compete with the larger players.

Google Analytics if free! They could track your conversions that way. How are they tracking other sales to their site?

Thanks for that reply. Do you mean that Google Analytics can be used to pinpoint the value of sales from a website? And that it can provide that information for just the traffic I drive to that site? I didn't realsie that.

Can anyone post a clue as to how that's done? Because if it can be done then I will do exactly what you say and approach the company again. It's been the inability to track sales values which has been the stumbling block.

As for selling them myself, it's not a realistic proposal. The widgets require a lot of space, specialist knowledge and it can't really be done on a small scale. The whole infrastructure involved in selling them is way beyond my capabilities.

@nomis5 - the merchant sets up the online purchase as a goal in google analytics. You can then supply what was sold and how much it was sold for. That's it... Google Analytics does everything from then on. You can then know precisely how much has been sold from a specific referer ie your site.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that they aren't doing it already.

It should do. Analytics uses cookie sessions to track users through a website, including tracking them through the sales process.

Thanks for those comments. One supplier has now set me up using Analytics and it clearly works. Six month sub donated says how happy I am!

I do nothing, Analystics does it all, absolutely everything. I don't even supply the value of the item sold.
