Geo domains, the one type of domain name the search engines cannot directly compete with, they've done an end around. There is only one newyork.com and one losangeles.com but the search engines now place their maps and their sites ahead of the top geo sites in any listing. Type in your city name, you'll see G returns its own stuff up top ahead of the pack - how long before they return their stuff ahead of every search?
Google slams paid advertising and penalises sites that sell links, yet they approve of link advertising if you pay for theirs.?!?
This post is a rant, I doubt i'm alone in feeling this way, what I want to know is where is the leading watchdog group that is keeping an eye out on this type of monopolisation? I want to at least see whats being done to attempt to regulate the industry at this point.
edit: it's becoming quite clear that whatever algorithm is used to rank sites should be controlled by an organization that is not a for profit company. I realise google and yahoo and the other top engines would need to fight for their existence if that happens, better them than all of the worlds webmasters imo. absolute power...

it's becoming quite clear that whatever algorithm is used to rank sites should be controlled by an organization that is not a for profit company.
Can't say I agree with that. The non-profit would still have to generate revenue or be subsidized. Either way they would be either advancing their own agenda or the agenda of others and with no competition could do whatever they wanted.
Competition in the business world is not always fair especially if you're competing with the big players but the alternative of no competition is not a better alternative in my book.

They do have a system for that in China....Seriously, if you think that there's such a thing as a non-profit, non-partisan, non-biased watchdog group that can regulate anything you must still believe in the tooth fairy.
I was looking for UK auction houses the other day, and entered the term "auctioneer" into Google. Before pages which included that term came back, came the Wikipedia dubious article about "auctions" with the term auction being highlighted by Google.
Google and a few other corporates are slowly (or not so slowly) starving out the competition in a manner reminiscent of the giant supermarkets.
