I have a script that is made so it emails the person once they sign up, then asks them to verify by clicking a link before they become a member. I did it this way in hopes to be in line with the Icann rules.

Are there any other steps I can take?

What if they forget they signed up and report me as spam? Do I simply refer back to my logs if need be?

How can I further protect myself?

thanks

ICANN takes care of domain name registration. Which rules are you following specifically?

People forgetting that they have signed up is a problem. On one of my mailing lists I had an angry email from a customer stating that he had never done business with us (for a listings magazine, his listing was in that issue!)It is important to have a full audit trail for each sign up that you can pull out as evidence in case of complaints. Details of each response should ideally be held as part of your membership database.

If you are using a third party web host the big risk is that they may pull the plug first and investigate afterwards in case of complaint.

Don't forget some mechanism for handling address changes.
