Penalty for too many words on page?

I am wondering if there is any penalty for having a very high total word count on a page?

For example, if a page contains a 5,000 word article but still has the same keyword density for the keyword being targeted as a page containing a 800 word article, would there be a reason to believe the page containing the 800 word article would rank higher, all other things being equal?

Obviously, in order to keep the keyword density the same for a 5,000 word article, the total number of times the keyword appears on the page would need to be much higher. Is there a recommended limit for the total number of times any keyword should appear on a page, or does it not matter as long as the keyword density is within recommended limits?

Thanks for any and all help anyone can provide.

If you have substantial unique content, there is little reason to obsess over keyword density; the page will always do well for related searches, simply because there are so many sites with cloned, plagiarized dross around. Uniquity beats keyword density almost every time.

The real problem you will have is that human beings will not like a page of 5000 words; it takes an age to download for many, and others resent that amount of scrolling. And a page of 5000 words that has been 'crafted' around a brace of keywords is likely to be the most boring page outside of the "London Telephone Directory Residential E - J" (I got to page 17 and fell asleep).

If you first optimize your site for human beings, you'll almost certainly find that you are almost there with the search engines too.

You can have a site that is theoretically 'perfect' for SEs, but it won't do you a lot of good if human beings choose to go elsewhere. Look at what your successful competitors are doing, and I suspect you'll see your error.
