Surveying visitors who leave

What is the best way, redirect or the dreaded pop up

I would like to offer visitors who leave my ecommerce site without buying anything the chance to fill out a survey so that I can get some useful feedback and use that to hopefully increase my conversion ratio.

Normal rationale would say to do this with a nifty exit pop up, but I like most people have spent a ton of time fine tuning my browser to block pop ups. So I can't imagine that anyone would recommend the "pop up on exit" approach to ask visitors if they would be willing to take a minute and fill out a short survey.

I thought about looking into doing some sort of redirect on exit, but I wonder if current pop up blocker technology would prevent that as well.

Anybody have an advice on how to best go about accomplishing my task of incepting the visitor who stops by and then leaves in a way that isn't obnoxious or objectionable?

No, it'll be obnoxious and objectionable no matter how you do it. It'll annoy some people enough that even if they were planning to come back later to make their purchase, they'll now decide to go somewhere else.

If you're dead set on doing it, I recommend using a popup. Since so many people have popup blockers, you'll annoy the fewest people with that method.
