Twitter has introduced TipJar to a limited number of users which allows followers to send money to their favourite users. It's on iOS and Android, and in English only at the moment, and is a limited test.

You’ll know an account’s Tip Jar is enabled if you see a Tip Jar icon next to the Follow button on their profile page. Tap the icon, and you’ll see a list of payment services or platforms that the account has enabled. Select whichever payment service or platform you prefer and you’ll be taken off Twitter to the selected app where you can show your support in the amount you choose. The services* you can add today include Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal and Venmo. Twitter takes no cut. On Android, tips can also be sent within Spaces.

This is a legal nightmare to police in the making, imo.

They should add a crypto option.

I'm not sure I understand.

Twitter half-life has started a year ago. Not unexpected to see them squeezing the sponge now.

Of course Twitter gets a cut. With tip jar Twitter can track who gives money to who and will, at the end of the day, be able to administer the platform accordingly.
Nothing can say who you might align with more than throwing actual money at your favourite echo chamber troll.

Anyone can send money to anyone else whether that's through twitter TipJar or any other method, so I do wonder how effective this might be. It might make it easier, and yes, i'm surprised crypto isn't there as an option.
Additionally, I do have some security concerns and bad actors might see this an an opportunity to gain a little more information about an individual.

@NickMNS - it's a legal nightmare because people can use it to pay their drug dealer or pay an escort, etc. Of course from the sounds of it they're not handling the transaction - just referring it to another service. But with laws like FOSTA/SESTA on the books they could be charged with sex trafficking because they facilitated the transaction.

[Caveat - I'm not a lawyer.]

Glad to see that platform grabbing for straws to regain users. It will only attract trash using it for illegal purposes.

They can also use cash to do the same. The difference of course being that every single crypto transaction (ether/bitcoin) is traceable, by using services such as [etherscan.io....] Whereas cash isn't traceable to the transaction level.

Based on your logic regarding FOSTA/SESTA, that simply using a crypto currency is considered facilitation illegal transaction, then I would think that the authorities we spend their resources pursuing the big fish like Tesla, Visa.

That's not at all what I said. In fact I have no clue how you even came to that conclusion.

What I said was that if there was an illegal transaction under FOSTA/SESTA and it involved Twitter's Tip Jar then they can be held liable for sex trafficking. FOSTA/SESTA applies to everyone involved in the transaction. Other platforms (e.g. Craigslist) took down whole sections of their site just because of FOSTA/SESTA. It's a rather horrible law that does the opposite of what it's authors intended.

Policing limits on donations to political campaigns for example, will be difficult. At least with banks you have centralized records. With this the money can go from person to person and be called anything, coffee money etc.

Twitter isn't a bank, they are far too political and activist engaged to expect money and those other issues not to fester together. Oversight, who's going to be receiving and reviewing all of Twitters transaction data?

Yes, Twitter can police their own political ideals, however, laws exist for financial details they can't make up as they go. I see growing pains here, worth it?
