Twitter is rolling out a new desktop UI which is says is easier to navigate, making the features easier to find and access. It also has an expanded DM with everything in one place.
Logging in and logging out has also been improved.

If someone writes a review on how much more data the new layout gathers post a link.

Very scrappy looking layout.

Yes .. keeps you on your toes for sure, in that if you're using Opera dark mode, the Twitter will load dark mode by default regardless of any previously designated personal setting you might have done in Twitter, complete with not being able to see the left hand links until you mouse over them (in order to go back to light mode) -- Deploying a site written exclusively for iPhone (or others) across all platform instances, i.e. Windows/Linux desktops, will be a wonderful idea ... I mean ... What could possibly go wrong? Right?

Twitter turned a 5 dollar an hour web dev guy lose with a colour crayon IMO.

If someone writes a review on how much more data the new layout gathers post a link.

Not sure about all of the new data, but I do know that Twitter is obviously recording many more clicks -- Takes twice as long to log out with twice as many clicks as before. The additional "HOME" link is a plus I guess. Now you have text "and" an icon from which to choose from, and if these aren't enough, you have to literally click on either of these at least twice in order to get back to the top of the page - (of course, clicking on the "see new tweets" modal drop down can get you to the top of the page much faster)

The new Twitter desktop is great for when you're too lazy or broke to actually write for for desktop - Citing the fact that Twitter totally ignores (I would hope mistakenly) all of those pesky little elements like screen resolutions and browser writes that might relate to desktop/laptop ... case in point, in Firefox you can literally see the "iFrame/Framest" borders complete with scrolling at various resolutions, but I suppose that's alright, because evidently, no one at Twitter uses anything other that their iPhone's for development any way, so it's all good as far as they're concerned.

I can hardly wait for Facebook to pull their mobile writes out of the .m domain for desktop cart blanche use like Twitter just did -- Not sure if there's going to be enough popcorn in the world for me to munch on as I sit back to watch that travesty unfold ... LOL

Got this mess last night.

Usable, but not handy.

Takes more clicks for no benefit for the user as far as I can tell so far.

Twitter apparently saw a reduction in use for the first time last month. Not surprising given that they are now even banning angel moms who demand accountability(the horror). Are the suggested reading pages still curated to see what they want you to see or can you actually get posts from people you want to get posts from even if Twitter doesn't like said posts? Before I quit and deleted all accounts, site and personal, several years ago they were hiding posts from people I wanted to be shown posts from.

I don't know what piece of dumb Twitter drama you're talking about, but I guarantee there's more context to it than you're letting on. What is an "angel mom," and who are they trying to hold accountable for what? You have more than 140 characters here. You are able to actually describe what's going on.

We generally try to stay away from politics and ideological arguments at WW ... though some comments do come from time to time ... and I am just as guilty in that regard, so not calling anyone out!

Still... focusing on webmaster and web issues sometimes involves having awareness of these other real world things, too.

... Twitter apparently saw a reduction in use for the first time last month.

... um ... because Twitter threw conventional desktop users under the bus in favour of mobile?
I haven't heard a single complaint from mobile users with regard to the new layout and function of the site. Why do you suppose that is? Could it be that the mobile write was meant for "mobile" in the first place?

... I don't know what piece of dumb Twitter drama you're talking about

... as far as shadow banning is concerned, this is something that has been going on for months/years. It's a private platform, and it's written and managed by people with a certain idealogical bent, so I'm not surprised at the eventual outcome with regard to the opinions of others whose agendas don't align with theirs.

Even on a good day your tweet won't be shown to just anybody who happens to wander on in.

Twitter has always been full of rubbish - Sales people milling around preaching to the choir, flamers and trolls, fake accounts, conversations with conversation bots, politicians and pundits showing off their idiocy .. It's endless. The main difference between yesterday and today is that Twitter finally matched their UI up with all of the rubbish it's been supporting over the years -- Now, instead of logging in to look at the stupidity, you can log in and look at the stupidity on a poorly deployed layout.

I think we all give social media too much credit -- We spend way too much time worried about the so-called metrics and have the tendency to totally over react when we lose as much as 1 follower.

Twitter took a fairly decent layout intended for mobile and totally borked it for desktop (which is where I do 99.999% of my work) -- In my world, layout and functionality mean something .. even "if" the platform itself is full of rubbish.

The additional "HOME" link is a plus I guess.

I spoke too soon on this one

Now there are 3 "Home" link options (actually 4 home link options if you count the "see new tweets" drop down modal)

You've got the bird icon home link (upper left) with the text home link just below that (left column) .. and the added 3rd text home link shows at the top left of the centre column --

Sort of wish they would quit messing about and put a "log out" text link up there somewhere too.

I love the tech world's kiddies looking at a project and saying:

"It ain't broke! Let's Fix It!

And they do ...

Then wonder where the traffic went.

The new look is interesting, it gets a couple of days to get used to, but the UX seems better and less empty spaces on the desktop version.
It also shows they might be more proactive in bringing new changes to the platform in terms of design, but we can also have higher hope to see more new features such as hide replies.

I've been looking for the secret decoder, so I can find out how to use it. Is there a help section anywhere?

For me, it's an absolute horror. Many crucial functions are now light yellow icons on white, if even that visible, and I can't find the help key to find out how to change this mess.

I have found 3 changes that I'd call improvements, but way too many changes that I think are going to cost them a lot of users.

And the Latest:

Twitter higher-ups might be feeling the heat on this new build of theirs -

Dantley Davis, VP, Design and Research at Twitter has been hitting the tweets pretty hard today in defence of the new, albeit extremely dysfunctional, design build.

I'm not real sure if I've ever seen top developer brass at any company come out in order to defend a job done as poorly as this.

He claims that Twitter got a lot of good input from thousands of users during the testing phase, but by how poorly this thing works, I'm left to wondering about just how many of those thousands of users actually know how to build for every device. And too -- how many of those thousands never actually left their phones during the testing.

As an aside, for those of you who might happen to like the original layout on Twitter?

Try this:

Go into your Twitter, and select the "More" option (in the left column) --

From there, click on "Settings and Privacy"

After that, scroll down and click on "Directory"

Once the "Directory" page loads, go up top and click on the "Home" link

You should then be rather magically transported back in time to your old Twitter layout.

Not sure how long this method will work, but at least for now it does.

You can also change your browser UA to this -- Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.18 -- to view old twitter

This is already out of date, and can be completely disorienting. Somewhere, there's a link to an opt out page that no longer exists. Aside from that...

How to use the new Twitter redesign you just noticed you have
[cnet.com...]

PS: mcneely, I was working with a separate tab, so didn't see all you'd posted... but I think they're changing it faster than we can follow.

Do be assured there is a reason for this redesign, and it is not about improving the user interface. Just sayin' ...

Scrutiny is coming down from many and varied places, and some of them have teeth.

And I have a bag of popcorn!

... but I think they're changing it faster than we can follow.

I sort of figured that they'll try and plug all of the holes as fast as possible on this - The add-ons for chrome and firefox seem to do the trick for now without following any particular sets of links on the site, or going through the ua changing process for your browser. Find the add-ons by searching "Good Twitter" on Google.

... it is not about improving the user interface

I agree ... With the drop in traffic over the past year or longer, Twitter had to come up with a way to garner more clicks. More clicks translates into more opportunities to show ads -- I think this is the direction Twitter is going.

In the mean time, the new add-ons for viewing old Twitter will most likely keep chasing the Twitter platform until Twitter completely drops the old design from the server main entirely -

I'm sure that Twitter doesn't really have the talent, or the resources that Google has when it comes down to any serious re-writes. I'll cite YouTube as an example of just how well Google did with it's re-write - Everything on the YouTube end views rather well on any device and I'm sure that Google pulled out all of the stops in order to get it done.

The last big outfit that I'm aware of that depends heavily on their mobile domain is Facebook -- I'm really interested in seeing how they plan to reconcile their mobile and their main. I'm sure that Facebook is watching how it's going with Twitter and taking notes on how it's all working out for them.

Since the new layout started rolling out is anyone else noticing their notifications are mainly telling you a "user you know has posted something"? Why are they doing that when the posts show up on the main Twitter feed? Seems like a pointless waste of time.

I must admit that I have better things to do with my time that fiddle with the Twitter interface. However one thing that is confusing me is that I don't get any text with the icons, not even when I hover the mouse over them. I am not sure that that meets accessibility requirements as there appears to be nothing for text to speech software to use. I used a friend's laptop last week and it had text alternatives with them all, using Firefox on both machines.

If I dig deep enough I am sure that I will find a way to turn text on or off, if I can be bothered. As well as the issue for the visually impared I have met a very few people who are unable to associate a consistent meaning to an icon and simply don't understand that a picture, say, of a little house will mean the same thing on multiple websites.

I keep noticing with the new interface that my Lists are no longer alphabetized, which makes them almost useless.

I'm also finding that not all the icons are intuitive.

Since the new layout started rolling out is anyone else noticing their notifications are mainly telling you a "user you know has posted something"?

No, I'm not seeing this. Actually, I can imagine how it might be a useful feature if it could be sorted quickly. It strikes me that Twitter may be showing different things to different users as a part of their testing... maybe a way of sampling different groups. I do find that I'm using Twitter a lot less now than I used to before the changes.

It's a little less user friendly from my perspective. The icons confuse me. I can get text next to them if I open the browser window to full screen, which is fine except that I normally have it at about 1200 pixels.

Well, I see that I can now bookmark tweets... the only real addtion I've found so far... but I can no longer organize the people who post them.

If anyone has figured out how to add a new list, or to alphabetize existing lists, I'd love to know about it.

What they're doing is "Pulling a FB" - making it increasingly difficult and confusing to actually log out banking on the fact that a sizeable enough percentage of users will simply "give up" trying to find the sign out option and remain signed in in the background, where they can continue to serve twitter ads (even if to nobody) run in the background and continue to collect Data..

Facebook started making it ridiculous to sign out circa 2012/13, even before they started shoving Messenger down eveyone's throats as a separate app to also run (constantly) in the background that somehow took up as much storage as the entire FB app itself, yet only had SMS functionality -...

It's also worth noting that even thought their user base is smaller than FB (actually a little smaller than Reddit) they actually have one of the highest annual income per user of any social media platform... FB is something aroundt $2, Twitter is around $8/user, YT is around $12/user, Reddit is abysmal like $0.30 per user (but they're notoriously cheap and the users are all millenials who think everything should be free, ad-free, and fully featured with perfectly maintained (yet the $ to pay for such service should come from thin air)...

Anyway, back to Twitter - point in pointing out their income per user - they know how to maxiise it, and they're not really "hurting" - they're just shedding a few more scruples and employing tactics more like FB (a progressively less user friendly UI that encourages accidental ad clicks and makes it impossible to sign out for many users, and is designed to purposely confuse les experienced users)

Just my 2 cents
