Twitter Limits Automation and Simultaneous Tweets Across Multiple Accounts

Twitter has been purging bots and spam from its system, and has now published new rules and guidance to limit the use of automated, simultaneous tweets across multiple accounts. It's also changed tweetdeck to no longer permit users selecting multiple accounts to tweet, retweet, like, or follow.

Do not (and do not allow your users to) simultaneously post identical or substantially similar content to multiple accounts.

Do not (and do not allow your users to) simultaneously perform actions such as Likes, Retweets, or follows from multiple accounts.

The use of any form of automation (including scheduling) to post identical or substantially similar content, or to perform actions such as Likes or Retweets, across many accounts that have authorized your app (whether or not you created or directly control those accounts) is not permitted.

Yes, I see there's been a lot of criticism. I guess it's those with most to lose, and probably most loss to those gaming the system.

Facebook / Twitter didn't mind all these automatic and fake accounts, because like that they were able to lure investors and advertisers by showing a constant expansion of their users base. So for years, they were fine and happy with these practices.

How will this impact those account management services like HootSuite whose primary purpose is to tweet out the same content over multiple accounts? That's against Twitter's ToS now. If other SNS follow Twitter's lead those companies are going to lose a lot of business.

I run one of these services, Socialdraft. So far, not much. We already instruct our users why their posts cannot be auto-retweeted within a 24-hour period and inform them if they are potentially violating any third parties' ToS. Our service specifically isn't used to spam on these networks. We focus on creating a single place for agencies and teams to to manage their digital marketing campaign. We don't allow spammers into our platform.

I wish the hell they would do something about automated spammers showing up in their keyword widgets, or at least let those who use the widgets tweak the code to block the most egregious offenders.
