I have been working on a website for several months now in a niche market and was doing pretty well. I was steadily getting closer and closer to page#1. So finally, I am practically there and WHAM I am 50 spots back.
I put a new page of fresh content on the site every few weeks, I have a blog on the site that is updated several times per week, I submit articles to directories on occassion, and I don't do a lot of link swaps.
The frustrating part is the sites I am competing against do the opposite (full or recip links, update infrequently, etc) and they seem to not move a wink.
Any ideas on how I can build a stable search engine presence or why this is happening?
Are you talking about Google? If so, there are some threads over in the the Google Forum talking about a similar effect:

As a less static site, I imagine where you sit in 'algorithmic space*' varies a lot, so you get bounced around. Your more static compitition stays where it is, for better or worse.
*algorithmic space (tm). Multi-dimensional area defined by the possible combinations of SE ranking criteria (such as PageRank, co-occurance, etc - Google uses several hundred)
