As pointed out in the the featured topic [webmasterworld.com...] , these things are passe. So, what all activities come under advanced SEO. If link building is poor man's SEO, what all comes under real SEO?
That is basic SEO
Very true. And this is part of the problem I have been facing ever since I picked up the first SEO related ebook more than six years back.
Everyone I talk to emphasize on the 'basic SEO' things I have to adhere to when building pages. But when asked for what's next in SEO,I always get vague and generic answers. :S

Anyone can throw up a website, but not anyone can get it to rank well. The basics of SEO are very important to get right, and not to be dismissed. It's the skill of actually doing the basics very well which is the advanced bit.
The good news is that I believe most people can make it to the top doing the basic SEO. To this day I still act like it's 2003, doing link exchanges, forums, directories, articles, ect and I can rank on page 1 for any KW I target. I just went from position 56 to 7 on a major kw I've been working on using these tactics.
On the other hand, it might be wise to hire a professional if you are in a highly competitive industry. Then you can stand over his shoulder and watch as he reveals his advanced SEO wizardry. :D
I have been doing basic SEO of my site but in the past it ranked in top 10 positions. unfortunately I have discovered that doing only Basic SEO is not enough as Google is updating its policies and dont know what it seeks for. I have now turned towards communities like Twitter and Facebook as I have read Google also ranks the site well if it link backs from social communities.
Then there's the other bit, that involves coloured hats. For example, buying up an expired domain with inbounds, and 301ing the lot. Thats not actually advanced (I would say its ugly, brute-force and now very risky), but gives you an idea of stuff that gets bandied about as 'advanced'. I suspect you could here more about it if you frequented boards less upmarket than these. It gerenally involves messing about with the technology and infrastructure of either the web or of Google, and most doesn't work like it its meant to.
But advanced SEO really is the non-scalar, non-recipe stuff. Stuff thats an art more than a technique. How many links off your homepage? How many links in and out of your pillar pages? How do you handle pagination? Do you keep internal search pages out of SERPs, and how (noindex or robots.txt)? Its HOW you do things, not WHAT you've done specifically.
It's joined up SEO, baked in from the out-set, not ecclectic scrabbling to complete a list of tick-boxes as a last-minute consideration.
Two years ago I launched a site in one of the most competitive niches on the internet. I worked on it a bit, then let it mature. Now I'm working on it again, using just what I've learned here, and I have some first-page results, with medium to long-tail phrases that face tens of millions of competing sites.
It's not that hard to get people to go to your site. There's all sorts of tricks that will bring visitors and give you a 100% bounce rate. The trick is to get them to come, and keep coming back. The other trick is to get them to come, read a little bit, and then click on the Adsense ads. ;)
making sure the bots travel around the site properly is very important!
I was just wondering today after a googlebot visit, how much is the frequency of googlebot visit important?
Apart from indexing the most recent content, is there any benefit in googlebot crawling my old pages (those that have already been indexed long time) again add any value?
