Successful Site in 12 Months with Google Alone [webmasterworld.com]
26 steps to 15k a day. By Brett Tabke
(If you haven't take a look at it, do it. Stop wasting time. Doing things right from the start really pays.)
OK, having several websites and being a one man band (working on a full day job and my sites every night) I'm exhaust and lacking interest on doing some work on a site already developed. This site is doing fine, but ended up last on the to-do list and now I just want to take a vacation. This came to my mind:
After all I've read I tend to think with much reason there is no magic there and I risk myself to hire someone and then get "because of the nature of the site, is doing fine how it is already, I could only increase a 1% blah blah" I mean, just a review? Is there any guarantee to have a real ROI?
I kinda have a competitor for this site I tell you about. My site grew really fast in traffic doing nothing :) but my competitor has almost twice my traffic with 40% less my content quality-quantity. I know I have to invest time on getting some quality links (this competitor already has a network bigger than mine) but right now I have no time available.
Perhaps this story comes from the fact that I always did everything, so I have no real knowledge on other peoples methods-results.
(This is not an ad asking for this kind of services, just a discussion, any opinion is welcome)
But ask yourself why they aren't making tons of money with their own websites
Well firstly, many probably are making "tons of money" from their own websites which would deliver leads on SEO offerings they may have.
Second:
SEO consultant != businessman/entrepreneur/web developer (necessarily)
Many have web development skills (and those that don't should) amongst many other skillsets including marketing, statistical analysis, content writing etc. Many are hired because of their strengths in a particular area, and what that may bring to a team/company.
They also don't necessarily have a 'sellable' product, as many would work through an agency.
Depending on the industry and your personal goals SEO can really make a tremendous LONG TERM impact on your website. SEO is a long term strategy. If you are looking for short term gains you should try PPC or other paid advertising. You get instant results.
The main thing is to get consultations from a few agencies and see who you feel comfy working with. In some many industries SEO can really make a huge differance.
Another comment is that you must take a holistic approach to marketing. there are so many things that you can do that are not really SEO but many have a huge SEO impact on your website. Like affiliate marketing for example. Look how many links amazon.com has. Many say they have one of the best affiliate programs around.
@eeek Many SEOs already have their own successful websites and want to do SEO because that is what they enjoy. Also just because a person is good at SEO doesnt mean that person has the TIME or resouces to work on your own projects. SEO is just ONE marketing channel that will make your business successful, one should not put all his eggs in one basket.
But ask yourself why they aren't making tons of money with their own websites.
Personally it's because there are three things that I am passionate about in this world, and only one of them will make me a living
1. Fancy rats, I keep and show pet rats, not a lot of opportunity for money making websites in this area, even breeders can't make a profit, and there aren't many people never mind advertisers in this area.
2. Knitting and spinning, I don't fancy the third world salary I could make doing this for a living, and I much prefer using the existing excellent sites out there, rather than spending that fun time building one of my own.
3. Online marketing, through this I have a lot of knowledge and experience that other people are willing to pay me for. There are lots of things in business you can do your self, you can do your own accounts, write your own contracts, keep abreast of all of the new HR and Health and safety laws, but most don't have the time, or the interest to do these things, and many don't have the time or the interest to learn about internet marketing.
If someone does, great, and I wish them the best of luck, but if they decide instead to handle their own HR issues and outsource their SEM instead, why shouldn't they?
Though if you already know the techniques of SEO, and only time is a limitation, why not hire a data entry operator and give him a training for 1-2 days on how to build links, do submission, etc... the manual work. This would be really cheap and under your control.
