Hi everyone,

I'm new to Internet Marketing and I need some advice about how to choose a good niche for a website.

Suppose that you have an idea for some niche that has a pleasing level of demand. So you go and Google that niche.

Now how according to Google results you determine whether you have a shot of being one of the first in your category(with a reasonable investment of time and effort)?

Do you have any "rules of thumb" you use?
(Inbound links, looking at the first results etc.)

Thanks!

Always consider BOTH supply and demand - a 'great niche' ain't so great if every other webmaster has spotted it.

Having said that, if it's a niche you know something about, then you'll have a clue from the search whether a site that you are able to make could compete with what's out there.

- Are the existing sites expert in the field?
- Do they have unique, interesting and original content?
- Do you have the skills to more than match them?
- Do you have the resources to more than match them.

The Internet has exactly the same rules as any other business venue; it's highly competitive, and demands plenty of knowledge about the Internet and the niche.

How many new shops in your local mall made you laugh out loud when you knew they hadn't done their homework, and hadn't a hope?

The difference is, on the Internet, the costs are lower - but the failure rate is much, much higher.

Internet #101 = Be Original, Be The Best.

Go to trade shows, walk around and find products that interest you then do the research and find which ones are worth while.
