I've a blog that for aesthetic purposes would be better not to have the page title (h1)displayed on the page. It interferes with the other elements, graphics, and so forth.

For instance on this site we use a 'box' above the content that is 2 images. the second is an opaque image that has special fonts and gives a nice effect and is the title of the page. So, to have the page title display nearby is annoying and redundant. Can't hide it with black or white because the background is a gradient color.

So, was thinking of adding into the header area instead. With the blog title, blog description and than have the page title.

Are there any negative search engine effects by doing this? any positive?

CSS style your header tags so they fit appropriately. Problem solved.

The plus/minus are debatable and their actual value likely depend on the composition of the rest of your content. Personally I like to keep my H1 tags as I feel they help.

H1, H2, and H3 tags have relevance for the search engines. Use CSS to set height/appearance to suit your presentation. I use 150% for H1 and 120% for H2 and H3, with H3 styled for italic. Just note that only one H1 should be used for any page.

Take a look at this thread where it discusses sIFR...

Image Replacement Techniques - What Is Google's Stance?

[sIFR] replaces text with the identical content rendered in Flash with a special display font. Since the text is inherently identical, sIFR is an inherently transparent approach and it cannot be suspected as spam.
