Duplicated content - on ONE page

Bad idea?

I know generally search engines do not like it when you have a non-unique content meaning some other site (domain) out there has a very similar content.
My question has to do with having content repeat on the same page. Let's say I put description of the same widget next to the pictures (with thumbnails for different view angles) for different colors.
First, a bunch of pictures for the blue widget with a description a little further down the same for red, yellow, and green widgets with pretty much the same description. Of course we could only put the description once but if a visitor wants to see how the green widget looks and scrolls to the bottom of the page and description is on the top then he will not see the description.
Is this punishable by the search engines as spamming?

Thank you.

Quote from Google Webmaster Guideline "Ask Yourself, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?" It will Give your answer of your query. Look at [google.com...] you will find very good reply of your post.

This may not be the exact answer you're looking for, but here is how I'd view it:

First, you're duplicating content on the page, so you look sorta automated. Far from ideal: The engines are leary of sites/pages that appear auto-generated, and/or, otherwise lacking in original content.

Also, repeating the same phrases may hurt the page's ability to rank, and in any case, I doubt it will help.

Last it makes me wonder if the content being replicated is also found elsewhere on the Web.

If the content is unique that helps. You could try adding more unique content, espeically high up on the page, to enrich the page and help it seem unique and rankable. Or you could find ways to hide the repetitive content like put it in frames or turn it into graphics or whatever.

What you are trying to do ultimately is give the search engines reasons to recognize and feature your page over many other potentially rankable and perhaps quite similar pages across the Web. So far, this plan doesn't help much in that regard, and would therefore rely very heavily on the site's link authority to rank decently.
