Direct mail being send to fictitious names

Getting letters that look like they contain a holiday card but aren't

I'm receiving mail in which the to address and return address are hand written.

These are holiday envelopes and look like they contain a greeting card. The first one I received was addressed to 'John Smith'. The next one was 'John and Jane Smith'. Except the first and last names are really rare or unique. One was addressed to 'John middle-name Smith'.

These kept coming over the holidays. (I didn't open them until just recently.) One of them had a debt consolidation offer in what looked like a Christmas card. The others were similar. One had a handwritten post-it note on the front of the card saying 'I didn't forget!'.

Have these been around in other parts of the country (US) for awhile?

Yes, the hand written post-it notes in the mail is decades old scam. Sleazy companies mail out stuff with post-it notes on it signed with common names or just initials about stuff like weight loss and wrinkle cream. I guess the idea is you are supposed to think a "friend" of yours is discretley letting you know about some kind of problem you need to address.
