The the question still remains whether H1 tag adds any importance for Search Engine Rankings or should we use H2-H6 tags and leave H1

There are speculations that Google sometimes look out for over-optimization techniques.

H1 can be considered as a sign of over optimization and hence some SEO recommend using H2 instead of H1, though there are no solid claims that H1 hurts a site in the SERPs.

If you look at the tags from a "human" perspective, you could compare them to a book. An <h1> would represent the title of a chapter while <h2>-<h6> represents the sub-chapters as in a Table Of Contents.

If you are looking for something specific, you first go to the chapter, but it is the sub-chapter where you will find exactly what you want. Does this make an <h1> tag less important? I cannot say for sure, but IMHO, if sny SE looks at a page as a human would, I believe the 2-6 tags are more specific to search and finding what you want.

Thanks AnkitMaheshwari for posting that. I just did a mini survey with interesting results all in Google UK. Checked the source and looked for h1's in the top 2 sites

Search 1 - oslo: No h1's used.
Search 2 - new york weekend break: top 2 used h1's.
Search 3 - london edinburgh flights: top site <img> with no relevent text, 2nd h1 with relevent text.
Search 4 - lawn mower: top site no h1, 2nd relevent h1.
Search 5 - norich plumber: top site h1 but not relevent, 2nd relevent.
Search 6 - ashton gate garage: 1st site 3 h1's 1 the last relevent, 2nd relevent h1.
Search 7 - eastenders bbc: 1st <img> with relevent alt text, 2nd relevent.

Thats to small a survey to be sure but I think I will gave less weight to using <h1-6> in the future. Also note that the search engines are all different too.

Search engines especially google will give more weightage on headers tags h1-h6, h1 has good importance than h2-h6 .

as one of our friend said above h1 is heading of the site and h2-h6 are sub categories, when we go to shop we will see first main heading of the book then secindly we will see sub categories and then we purchase the book.

so as same google bots will crawl first heading h1 and then h2-h6.
dont use more than one h1 tag because google will think that the site is over optimized and will give less priority to the site.

As far as the h's go, I haven't noticed any difference from using one or the other.
