Hi guys

Finally gotta page 1 for my trophy keyword phrase, only to find t'was a hollow deed. :-)

Thing is I'm not getting swamped with eager visitors, tsk, tsk

So, it strikes me dat my tail isn't long enough nor is it fat enough

So, if i might ask you who know, how many phrases, would you target.

For arguments sake, say we stick to phrases that are credited by yahoo keyword tool with like say 25,000 searches per month

Ok, I also know that one needs to be at the top of the page one , but seeing as giants live in the top 5 slots of my niche, consider say number 7/8/9/10 slots in the serps

Would appreciate your responses

Tough question. I might look at it from this perspective; "How many phrases "can" I target?".

Your content will determine the phrases that you "can" target. I wouldn't try to force additional phrases into the mix, there is no need to. They will come naturally as you add more content relevant to those phrases being targeted.

I don't think it is a question of how many would you target but more of a question of how many can you target based on the existing content that you have. Is it time to start reorganizing and recategorizing that content to now present more opportunity for growth? Are there longer pages that are not 100% focused that could be broken down into 2, 3 or possibly more pages that are more focused, targeting those keyword phrases more definitively and allowing for further growth?

Yep, folks don't always search for what you think is the appropriate keyword phrase. I think it's best to consider "your" keyword phrase as a base from which to develop other phrases and combinations around. When building a page be sure to use related and associated words and phrases, synonyms, etc., and use different word orders here and there. This should lenghten your tail a bit.

I'll use one of my sites as an example. It has about 1,500 pages, so you can say I'm "targeting" about 1,500 key phrases. So far this month it has been found through just more than 50,000 different search phrases - on Google alone.

That tail is very important.

That's almost the same as my site as far as the number of pages and number of search phrases go. Here's another number to think about, on my site, of about 53,000 search phrases, a little more than 40,000 of those search terms were used only once during the month.

Yeah, that tail really thins out quickly. On the site I mentioned above I usually don't have any terms driving more than around 2% of the traffic.

Diversity is important. Just like jimbeetle, I don't have any keywords or phrases that drive more than 1.8% of the traffic.

I had (emphasis on the word "had") an SEO client who wanted to keep her site relatively small. Aside from the fact that she didn't want to properly employ the text on her site for the keywords she wanted, she didn't want her visitors to have to look at tons of pages.

So, I created dozens of pages for her keywords and linked to them from the site map page. Each page would then end with, "for more information on red widgets, click here," with that link going to one of her main pages.

The result was that traffic to her site increased by 35% in just three months. But some other SEO outfit convinced her that she should concentrate on fewer keywords, so she dumped me and went with them.

She's an idiot.

Your answers are what I feared you would say, the words hard slog spring to mind.

Thanks
