Expanding Content for SEO on an Ecommerce site

What kind of content do you add?

Hey Guys,

Quick question... On an Ecommerce site when you add content in order to grab SEO or SERP's; what kind of content do you guys add? And how do you keep it from distracting from what you sell? If i sell widgets and i write all these articles on widgets, dont i just get visitors who want to read about widgets but not actually buy? Or do you go and monetize your articles as well (but that would canabalize your own sales).... Also, what location do you give these articles, are they prominent (announced prominently on homepage?); or is it just there for SE's to find?

What is the best way to go about handeling it? I am looking at the sites that rank well in my keywords/field and they dont have much content (articles, they do have just not much. Not at the rate im hearing about, an article a day) but they do have alot of product pages (as do i, my DB is 2800 products).... I also believe that i am still sandboxed, my site is only 5-6 months old....

Am i missing something here?

If you sell widgets, you can write content on widget care. If that page ranks well, you will get people looking for widget care coming to that page (some of them will want to replace their old widget with a new one [potential customer]).

This page should mention your newest line of widgets. It would be a good idea to tell everyone if they need to care for their widget then they can visit widgetcare dot com (given you don't provide widget care and make sure that the link opens in a new window). It is a good idea to harness good outbound links not only for SEs, but for your visitors. Of course make sure widgetcare dot com is a good authoritative site.

Then repeat this process with a white widget article, a red widget article, an article about widget history, widgets throught the world, best widgets, most popular widgets, "a" companies widget review, "b" companies widget review, etc. To aquire content in massive amounts (depending on your visitors) you can ask your visitors for their imput. You can even organize a contest; "Win The Widget of your choice: Tell us which widget you like best and why?".

Where would I place these articles? Well I would have an article section linked from the template. I may mention either the most popular/newest/best articles on the home page. How many links, and where depends on your sites curent navigation.

To get out of the sandbox, get inbound links to your internal pages. If you want to find out about getting inbound links, just visit the "Link Development" section of this forum, and read, read and read some more.
