Why Aren't We #1

Because you're not!

Client: Edward, how come we aren't in the #1 position for our primary keyword phrase?

Edward: Are you serious? You've been jockeying between positions 3, 4 and 5 out of 240,000,000 results. I'm doing my best using "by the book" strategies.

Clients, they just don't get it sometimes! But, I cherish them all!

I know what you mean. One client has almost tripled sales because we optimized their site for all the mid and long tail phrases. (I recently heard the mid-tail described as the "fat belly" -- I like that!)

However, we intentionally did not address their "trophy" single keyword, because it was too generic and the traffic they were already getting from it was not converting. So what do we hear? You guessed it - I want #1 for my trophy keyword.

Clients like bragging rights. Part of what we're doing is building their business. And part of it is allowing them to show their family and friends what they are achieving. It's all good.

P.S. When I show off work I've done, I don't point people to my #5 rankings. ;-)

I do! Particularly if there are over 100,000,000 results returned for the query.

Aw c'mon POR, you can get to #1 on a 100,000,000 result SERP with a PR5, two year old site, and a handful of decent links.

Besides, it's the ferocity of the competition and the ROI that matter, not the number of possible results in a SERP set. Leastways, that's how we look at it. ;-)

Aw c'mon POR, you can get to #1 on a 100,000,000 result SERP with a PR5, two year old site, and a handful of decent links.

That particular feat becomes more difficult with each passing day. It's not as easy as it once was to obtain those coveted #1 positions. Sure, sites with history and PR stand a much better chance but new sites are doomed for any immediate results. Unless of course you take another path than I. :)

Client = Self. Why is my trophy keyword not #1? I've done everything that I can do!

I like the pragmatic attitude: Because! That's a great stress reliever. Top 10 is quality enough, and still drives traffic. Number one is a motivator. Then I look around and find those 'fat belly' phrases (FBP's) and I'm not only stress free, but actually feeling better about all the time and effort that has gone into this venture. I've reached goals that once upon a time I never even knew about, and broadened my reach to previously untapped income.

And of course when you get them to #1, and then you slip to #2... ;)
