The WiFi alliance has announced WiFi 6 and devices that support 802.11ax devices.

In addition, it's now re-branded all generations as follows.

Wi-Fi 6 to identify devices that support 802.11ax technology

Wi-Fi 5 to identify devices that support 802.11ac technology

Wi-Fi 4 to identify devices that support 802.11n technology

More and more, I am of the belief that as mobile networks continue to evolve, they will replace most of the current functions of WiFi.

The new "always connected" notebooks currently using 4g LTE work pretty fast. Bench marks predict the new 5g "always connected" notebooks will be approx 300X faster than the current WiFi (the newer WiFi versions didn't make the tests yet.)

On my phone I've noticed that my 4g mobile network is much faster than the free WiFi zones around my city. I do use them when available just to relieve mobile bandwidth use, but they're always slower, especially streaming.

I'm still making up my mind, but in all indication, 5g will leave behind WiFi technology.
