Taking a leaf out of Microsoft's book, Google is to stop updating the default browser in Android Jelly Bean in a move to encourage users to update their systems.

Jelly Bean is not that old, so some users it might smart a little. I guess there are other browsers to choose from, including chrome.

I do remember having one of the very early smartphones which was perfectly usable, until the android upgrade. Once upgraded it became as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike!

Perhaps the reluctance to upgrade is also down to a fear. When upgrades take place a lot of the settings end up trashed.

The new policy applies to the default browser in Android version 4.3, released in mid-2013 and known as Jelly Bean, and earlier. That covers roughly two-thirds of the billion-plus Android devices in use, according to Google, but some users may have updated their browsers to newer versions. Its annoying when vendors or providers act like this. There may be native issues with the OS that will prevent future versions being fully compatible, perhaps that goes some way to justifying it.

It may push users away from the default browser towards an alternative. Firefox and Dolphin HD work very well on Android.
