South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Thursday it aimed to treble smartphone shipments this year to more than 18 million units as the world's second-biggest cellphone maker scrambles to make a mark in the fast-growing smartphone market.
"There'll be a big change in our smartphone strategy this year," Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung's mobile division told reporters.
"We plan to strengthen our smartphone business this year by not just improving hardware offerings but also beefing up content, applications, services."

Gartner also used the term:
"Research house Gartner expects the smartphone market would nearly treble to 525 million units by 2012 from 179 million in 2009."

Otherwise, this sounds good. More choice is better. This is probably good for Android too, depending on what this new strategy is.

Samsung have always made good products, and competition is always a good thing. I think Samsung need to rethink how they do smart phones. I have seen a few examples of fairly top end Samsung phones and they are more what I would term semi-smart.
Android powering a samsung phone is a logical step forward.

Thanks. I have not commonly heard treble as a synonym for triple commonly used in US English, but I could certainly be behind the times, so I assumed a grammar/spell check error.

There are too many phone models already, it's getting insane.
Hopefully if they do this it's Android-based and not more Symbian stuff.

Actually it's an old term, rarely used anymore except in legalese with terms like "treble damages" designed to confuse the masses.

Samsung is already in the SmartPhone market, whether it makes its own OS or not.

Not necessarily true. People would not necessarily buy more toiletpaper if there were five manufacturers of it instead of three.
It's only true if the Samsung hardware with Samsung OS is unique enough from Samsung hardware with Android or Windows, that it encourages people to buy a smartphone that would otherwise buy a smartphone from any manufacturer with any OS. That's a pretty good stretch goal for Samsung.
