Don't you think it's very similar to Chrome and FF.

the 3 shades of blue remind me of the chromium logo and the pointy end of the light blue section reminds me of the pointy part of the previous edge logo.

Here it is, along with a transition from old to new.

But which FF? They changed colors on the latest release, and boy is it distracting to glance over at the Dock “Hey! Where’d my browser go? What’s that purple thing?”

Is this change for the sake of change, so we can now expect to see brand-new icons for Safari, Chrome and Opera as well?

It's because Microsoft is changing it's rendering engine over to Chromium engine. See [webmasterworld.com...] and [webmasterworld.com...]

As I already had Chrome I saw no point whatsoever in using Edge when introduced. I recollect commenting at the time that it was just a "Clone of Chrome"

Totally superfluous...though I still use

1. IE 11 - which still has special features for me when used in conjunction with Google Toolbar - no other browser allows text selected on a page to automatically appear in Google for search. All searches I conduct in IE 11. The other browser are a pain for search.
2. Firefox - although with rotten updates they continue to kill off add ons making it next to useless.
3. Chrome - As a result of 2 above is now my default browser.
4. Opera - I use Opera for specific purposes which suit my browsing.
5. Cuppla others I use very infrequently.

And NO! I have zero interest in anything which says "it does/you can be" 250 milliseconds faster.

If you want to be hairsplittingly technical, it's "search {your specified default search engine}". I just tried it in FF.

in opera & vivaldi ... on select text > right click, you can either "search for 'selected text'" which uses your default engine, or the next option "Search with" which is a drop down listing all your other chosen search engines and you can select any of them if you prefer!

Ummm... could it be as simple as one of the graphics guys had a brain phart and produced some eye candy and needed job recognition?

Nah ... this sound like corporate in three piece suits saying "Market! Market! Market!"

Still end up with an "e", just harder to make out ... which kind of explains Edge in the long term.
