Microsoft Confirms it is Building Microsoft Edge Based Upon Chromium

Microsoft has confirmed it is to adopt Chromium open source project as it develops its Edge Browser, citing less fragmentation and better compatibility. Starting with desktop, it will updated for all supported versions of Windows, and will be updated more frequently. It'll also work more closely to improve the open source Chromium-based browsers better on Windows devices.
Developers should follow the preview builds, with the first ready in early 2019.

It will continue to provide Edge for legacy IE-only sites.

Bye bye Edge HTML, and welcome to a Google-dominated browser-engine world.

What will it do for other browsers based upon other engines? It could further degrade their market share as a dominant engine could mean an end to development of smaller market share browsers.

Gee. And all this time I thought Edge actually was a crude imitation of Chrome.

All the time I was using Chrome for certain applications, there was no need for Edge.

Now it's going to be a clone?

The reasons why it's doing this are interesting, and it really just cements what Microsoft has been doing under Nadella. There's a recognition it no longer controls the market it would traditionally dominate, and to remain a major player it has to play a different game.

I only use Chrome for compatibility browser testing purposes, I quite like Edge however it will now get consigned for testing purposes as well.

'Tis a good job I have Opera and Firefox, occasionally I use Yandex, maybe I'll use it some more.
