On the anniversary of GDPR's enactment, Microsoft is calling for the U.S. federal regulators to embrace and enact privacy in a similar way to GDPR in Europe.

Now, it’s Congress’s turn to adopt a new framework that reflects the changing understanding of the right to privacy in the United States and around the world. Like GDPR, this framework should uphold the fundamental right to privacy through rules that give people control over their data and require greater accountability and transparency in how companies use the personal information they collect.

I wasn't a fan of all the extra work I had to do for GDPR last year, but don't necessarily have a problem with privacy being legislated. It enforces some good habits.

As MS has to comply with GDPR for its EU markets, and they should already have everything in place, it wouldn't be a stretch for them to apply similar to their US market products. However, if they're promoting this, then they probably expect that not all their competitors are fully capable of compliance and might be looking at this as an edge for their business.

Exactly, competitors might not be able to be compliant with such regulation in the US, OR, it might hurt their business model ... For example, Google and Facebook are (supposed) to be compliant with the EU GDRP, and they certainly have the resources to do the same in the US, but, won't this impact their business model in a significant way?
