Microsoft's recent experiment with AI [webmasterworld.com], Tay, went off the rails [webmasterworld.com], but that's not stopping the company from continuing to experiment. Clearly, AI needs to be directed and set limits, and the Tay experiment proves that. Without experimentation it's often not possible to develop such products and services, and if Microsoft continues its progress into bot tools and chat bots, we could all be interacting very soon: Even if it's a relatively low powered chatbot, such as an example of the pizza bot.

Here's an interesting angle in this article where Microsoft is looking to work with developers.

Microsoft says it will probably sell bot-making tools as well as database and cloud software that businesses will use to run their bots. The bottom line for Nadella: He needs a lot of bots out there, ready to do helpful things for people. Microsoft Building Several Different AI Chat Bots [bloomberg.com]

I was a bit surprised that they didn't test this more before letting it out into the wild, but it didn't take long for them to get some real-world experience. ;)

It doesn't seem like this misadventure is going to dissuade them from continuing development of bots, which is good.

But is it good? If social media platforms don't stringently outlaw AI bots then a house of bots is what they will have.

Well, if they aren't developing the bots then all we'd get is Tay ;)

If bots are disruptive then of course they should be blocked from certain platforms. However, I think this recent MS foray into the world of bots is not what should be expected for the future. There is a lot of potential in this field. Twitter-bots that post inanities is not what we should look forward to.

This is a great chance for developers to learn. It seems that the public isn't very receptive for this technology yet. Although, Id like to have a chat bot, in MY own image!
