Does anyone use redirect + noindex for their mobile m.site?

Does this make sense?
- desktop site redirects to mobile m.site
- mobile site is meta robots noindex (not robots.txt excluded)
- desktop sites ranks well in mobile SERPS anyway

Why would you do this? Why should it work? Why not?
Would you add canonical/alternate tags or not? Does it make a difference?

Any thoughts please? Did anyone try this?

Sounds as if the search engine is calling your bluff ;) "You don't want the mobile site indexed? OK, we'll index under the name of the main site-- which we happen to know comes with a good mobile version."

Aren't "alternate" and "canonical" to some extent self-contradictory in this situation? One means "use this URL no matter what"; the other means "pick the one that works best for your particular circumstances".

I was hoping for some confirmation/debunk from someone who tried ;)

Alternate/canonical between desktop and mobile seems to work slightly different from a 'normal' caonical. The 'original' mobile URL pointig to the desktop version does show up in search results (in the standard situation without noindex).
