Comscore 2017 mobile apps report indicates mobile apps account for 57 percent of all digital media usage. Is that more than you realised?
Desktop is accounting for only 34 percent. Obviously, those are amalgamated figures, and everyone will see different result.

Take away - Only 43% of total digital media usage is on the web. And I assume that the number is trending down. Conclusion, to be relevant one must convert website into app (PWA).

There is only one thing that is confusing me about the stats. 34% of time is spent on desktop. Is that on the web? If this is the case we infer => 34% + 2% (tab-web) + 7%(mob-web) = 43% total for the web and then 7/43 = 16% of web usage is on mobile devices. But that is really not what I am seeing on my sites. It is more like 60% mobile.

Also if you look at the top 10 apps, Google Search is number 4. Google search is a gateway to the web. So how does that figure into the stats?

How much of this represents a decline in desktop, rather than simply an increase in mobile usage by young millennials?

Most of us who work on the web still prefer using a powerful Desktop computer and are probably a bit jaded when it comes to acknowledging the reality of the Decline of the Desktop Computer [webmasterworld.com]

A few years back when Social Media started to hijack a good percentage of my organic traffic, and shortly after when smart phones took even more (before my site was responsive) I decided I was going to take back that lost traffic.

It was then that I saw the symbiant relationship between Mobile and Social Media. Social Media and all its Apps is a Mobile world. Social means sharing and that sharing only works when the recipients are accessible... and that requires a device in the hand or pocket, not a big heavy machine sitting on a desk somewhere.

Outside of the office, people are just not buying desktops any longer. There's no need. Most just want access to email, texting and their favorite apps... all done on today's mobile phones. The occasional search to look up a fact is easy from a phone, and local search is tailor made with GPS directions included.

For my sites, mobile traffic has generally been 50 to 60% weekdays and 70 to 80% on weekends... but I work at it.

I think that what this report highlights is that the critical question is not one of desktop vs mobile. The question is:
"How are mobile users consuming data, through apps or through websites?"
and from this the question becomes:
"Is a simple website enough or are native apps or progressive apps going to become critical to success?"

For a long time now apps have been important, even though finding an app as a standalone has been really difficult. That's a hurdle to be overcome, imho.
