We heard about Microsoft's issues with Windows 10 updates and problems [webmasterworld.com] people were having.

There's news of yet more problems with KB4535996 with boot problems and crashes.

The company has published a support page explaining that a new bug in Windows 10 can prevent users from manually installing drivers on their PCs. Users will receive the error message: "A driver can't load on this device" and it can break installations even after they appear to complete successfully. Microsoft states "If you choose to continue using your device without addressing the driver problem, you might discover that the functionality the driver supports does not work any longer, which could have consequences ranging from negligible to severe." Third party drivers can be essential, particularly for legacy devices, so Microsoft has offered a workaround which (perhaps surprisingly) involves turning off a Windows 10 security setting that guards memory integrity to allow the driver installation to complete

From the "solution" page
  • See if an updated and compatible driver is available through Windows Update or from the driver manufacturer.
  • Turn the Memory integrity setting Off if it isn’t already. You'll need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
It is an acknowledgment that there is a flaw somewhere in the published driver architecture, rather than an easy-to-fix bug in Windows. Manufacturers have created many proprietary drivers in the last several years which were validated and have been working for years, and now with a Windows update, those drivers may stop working unexpectedly.

It's very complex, lammert, but i think these things should be ironed out before they are rolled out to consumers. MS has been a little slack of late resulting is annoyances for users. It destroys productivity as it is with the way Windows updates seem to take too long.

How about they just stop having untested defective updates?

Or should I say perpetual defective updates?

This kind of thing is not ALL ms's fault ... there's too many driver makers out there that are NOT keeping up with the new security features in Win10 ... as a result BOTH get broke, but Win10 gets the blame.

That said, you'd think MS might test EVERY DRIVER (their software does call home and report what's installed) to prevent these kind of issues.
