I'm installing the Windows 10 update for January and have run into a few problems, most of which have been on some machines that just seemed to take forever. The biggest of which is the loss of the internal CD/DVD drive on one machine.

Device Manager Properties says.
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

The driver could not be loaded because a previous version of the driver is still in memory.

After several reboots, still no luck.

Any suggestions?

This all happened as I was using the DVD drive, burning files to the drive, and resulted in a failure. It appears Win 10 was installing the update at the time this happened.

OK, I solved it, and I had to disable the device.
Reboot, the enable the device, then reboot again.
All working again, and I can burn the data to a new DVD.

Tiresome, but resolved.

When I just restarted the Desktop a message came up saying you can't have the security update until you take the latest feature update.

Oh really?

BTW: When update file $WINDOWS.~BT appears on C: drive, I rename it "WINDOWS.old" then do the following.

1. Click on drive C: "properties"
2. Click on "Disk Cleanup"
3. Click on "Clean up System Files"
4. Click on "OK"

Fingers crossed, I've bitten the bullet, installed it and so far no issues, first thing I checked was the DVD drive.

you can't have the security update until you take the latest feature update.

Not sure what that's about. Any idea what the "feature" was?

I checked was the DVD drive.

I suspect my issue was that I was actually using the DVD drive at the time Windows was installing.
There's no warning from Microsoft to stop using the machine, although, i should have thought of that. my fault, not Microsoft's. j/k lol,

When Mr. Microsoft addresses known problems it may restore my faith to update

Windows 10 - Error 0xC00D426A
Error rears its ugly head again

There are others of course. You only have to follow Insider and other Microsoft forums.

Build 1803 causing copy "Error Code 0xC00D426A: Error reading from the network over LAN"
[answers.microsoft.com ]

No such problem in Build 1709. Curiously there is a convoluted way to download via Windows Media Player under other builds.

Oh, right, thanks, I'll keep a lookout for that. No doubt it'll catch me unaware.

Last update took off the keyboard of my son's brand new laptop.
Keys work in BIOS manager, but once Windows starts, he need an external USB keyboard.
Lenovo customer service can't help because they... have not keyboard drivers for this model! :-(

When I just restarted the Desktop a message came up saying you can't have the security update until you take the latest feature update.

Then I remembered there is always another way. Look for what is needed on the update - restricted to my 1803

"2020-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4534293)"

That is the January update - for my particular build.

Then go to Mr. Microsoft's trusty Update Catalog
[catalog.update.microsoft.com ]

Enter KB4534293 [in my particular case] in the search box, and download, install, and restart.

BOOM! BOOM!

Next?
