Microsoft issues a patch to fix a critical Remote Code Execution vulnerability in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008, and out-of-support Windows 2003 and Windows XP.
Windows 8 and Windows 10 are unaffected.

The reason Microsoft gave for fixing older Windows systems, and out -of-support systems, such as XP, was that a remote code execution could turn the PCs into a source of future vulnerability, infecting other vulnerable systems.

Microsoft strongly advises all affected systems be updated as soon as possible.

Microsoft just needs to kill off XP and call it a day -- This whole business of trying to please all of the people all of the time is wearing a little thin.
Microsoft users aren't going to run off to Mac or Linux if Microsoft puts it's foot down with a kill switch -- These people have been letting Microsoft rip them off with licensing for so long, that they'll surely cough up the bucks for more licensing because Windows is the only thing they know.

Over the years I don't ever recall Microsoft caving on back writes for 3.01, 95, or 98 -- Are they so desperate for deprecated users now that they have to spend millions just to keep them on board with their antiquated systems?

Internet Explorer 6 comes to mind every time I see notices like this -- The internet at large would be so much more secure if we could just dump these old systems to the rubbish heap and call it a day.

I believe XP is used on automation as well as legacy PCs, but I agree, it needs to go.

Interestingly, I have a very old PC here and it hasn't been used for many years. Not sure why I'm keeping it.
I plugged it it and turned it on, and, surprisingly, it booted up.
I tried to find the update but no luck.
Note, i have no plan to use it or leave it connected, but will try again for the update, purely out of interest.

-- i have no plan to use it --

I turned 3 of mine into flower boxes last year, just coat them with Clear Flex Seal on the inside.

P4/256Mb RAM, supercharged tower, hosts a nice bunch of Lemon Grass plants this year!

Sophos has released an advisory [community.sophos.com] that users of their Endpoint Security and Control and Central Endpoint Standard/Advanced running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 have experienced hang (freeze) on boot and recommends removing the Windows updates (14-May-2019: KB4499164 (Monthly Rollup), KB4499165 (Security-only update)) via Safe Mode and wait on update in development.

I have several old drives and machines and even some floppies because I'm pretty sure they have stuff I should export to newer equipment... yes, not just happy with junk drawers I have junk under cabinets... plus a number of mystery boxes... all neat and dusty waiting on time... alongside boxes of family photos/movies that need pruning/digitising as those who could give context and identity are gone... can anyone spare a year or three?

Other than Life Itself, True Love, Children, the next most precious thing is Time. (sigh)

I have no years to spare and am at this late stage burning both ends of the candle ... and the middle, too!
