At today's event in New York, Microsoft announced Windows 10 S edition which is aimed at the education sector, and is a cut down version which only runs apps from from the Windows Store.

With the limitation of app installs and updates from the Windows Store, Microsoft demonstrated that the software is much faster at boot-up, and can push updates through the Store. In addition, in schools the administrator, or teachers can update with a preloaded USB key.
Microsoft says that its hardware partners will start shipping in Summer 2017.

Good move to only allow downloads from the Windows Store. Gives the admins & teachers better management.

A major distraction in curriculum has been text/chat apps that students use to carry-on conversations during class. Apple, who successfully put iPads in classrooms around the world, failed to block simple jail-break techniques that allowed 3rd party app installs in the past.

Looks like these units won't have a USB-C. That will make a lot of mobile phone owners unhappy.

Won't be able to make Google's Chrome browser the default either.

I don't understand why no USB-C, but it's Microsoft protectionism on the browser.

Could also be a way for M$ to stop other influences on the propriety. The tablets & phones who most use USB-C can't connect without it.

It is also nifty keen for getting folks to pony up $49 to unlock all the features.

Apple has had its grips on the edu market for years, while M$ was dominant with the office worker. This appears to be M$'s first big push toward getting that slice of the edu pie.

MS and G have been big in edu for many years (actually, decades for MS, last decade for g) Apple has hit mighty fine in certain parts of the US (think coastal elites). Hope they all continue to do well as we need more hackers ... er, intelligent users! ... to visit our websites.

Coastal elites? Ha ha... I referring to the K to 12 classrooms across the US equipped with iPads. Never saw any Windows tablets.
