In the event your 10162 update, downloads but fails to install - no matter how many manual restarts you have made? Yes it still desperately wants to restart at some ungodly preset hour the next morning - no matter what you do?

Think laterally as I did. Change your PC/Laptop date and time to a few minutes before their preferred scheduled start.

NO, manually altering the time IT WANTS to restart doesn't actually work.

You can enter a new time, but it will still go back to their scheduled time.

Once again? Unbelievable. Really confidence inspiring.

Don't forget to reset your clock and date afterward. I write this as it installs and configures - fingers crossed. I bet I don't see a significant difference. Some folks are apparently excited about seeing the Edge.

Now we're up to Build 10166. Same update problems all over again.

Now that's finally settled?

"The Edge" is now the default MS Browser - trying to reinstall IE11 gives the message "incompatible with your system".

No apparent obvious way to quickly customise it. No home page, just some stupid News Feed. No menu bar available, no toolbar available, no ready means of discerning "how to". A total dead loss.

I will NOT be recommending Windows 10 to anyone, and if it makes IE11 impossible to re-install it won't be going on the desktop.

Windows 10 offers me not one incentive to upgrade from 8.1

Others may have differing views.

I've yet to have the opportunity, or pleasure ;) to try this.

After the Win 7 to Win 8 update, i'm also cautious. This could be Microsoft's opportunity to redeem itself, of to send it's OS to oblivion.

Apple must be looking forward to the Win 10 update.

Can Apple gain ground?

What I'm seeing (and not liking) is a greater reliance on "service" extensions to the web and an utter destruction of Media Center and requirement of new DVD level software to play ordinary movies, etc. There are some things I like, but I don't like anyone messing with me music and video!

MS looks to be managing property rights as well as a touch interface and One Drive will not die. :)

The phone hone and frequent updates features are also problematic for some who do not maintain a 24/7 internet connection. Nor the rollout of Wi-Fi as a subscription...

The more I fiddle with this the happier I am with Win7 (my current production machines). Have one Win7 to keep up with clients ... and now have the boat anchor Win10 ... fortunately a machine I was about to retire as redundant.

I will say that the footprint is good, the speed reasonable.... but for some the above (and the way apps are handled, much less the Office 365), I am very guarded at the moment.

Add to that, the growing list of "legacy" apps that won't run. For me that is (work related) PS5 (yes I know!), WordPerfect 10, HomeSite 4 (yes I know), and a handful of little graphics things not too many use in the first place.

Haven't tried it, too many other things to fiddle with this beast.... Has anyone installed older versions of MS Office Pro (2000 and up)?

Has anyone installed older versions

I don't use Office, however until these latest builds [haven't checked lately] all my older programs ran as expected.

The fact IE11 has been wiped, and will not re-install is I think ominous. Firefox 38 works OK, I haven't checked out Thunderbird.

With these updates, they seem to trash all the previous User Program Data files... Reinstall preferences from back-ups etc. That's plain ridiculous. I haven't re-installed Mailwasher because of that every time.

Dumb and dumber. As they say in Medicine...

"Firstly - DO NO HARM" - someone should tell Microsoft that.

Forgot
and One Drive will not die

I killed it in earlier versions, with the two latest builds it hasn't reared its ugly head to annoy me so far.

It will be lurking there somewhere. Why any ordinary user would want to use OneDrive is a mystery for me.

I have a slim Toshiba 1TB external drive to which everything critical to me is backed up. In an absolute emergency I can put that inside my coat pocket and go. I also keep a copy on two web sites.

I learned that from the bitter experiences of folks a few Km from me in a bushfire. Literally minutes to get out, take nothing but yourselves. They lost files, photos, data which was very precious to them and can never be recovered.

[ADDED] - Data which included Home Insurance details etc, etc.

@IanPC, know the feeling. However, One Drive is part of the larger MS "experience" of putting it all on the web so all devices have one point.... but that is not something I am trilled with.... ie. not under my personal control. I guess I'll wait for the final to see what to do about that.

CORRECTION: -It still lives, lurking, lurking.

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

Yes, I did get the menu bar back - now to import settings from the Desktop.

I have not played with the Windows 10 preview as much as I did others. I got the first preview release before the new Start menu was included and had so much trouble trying to upgrade it that I haven't bothered with another release until 10166. In the short time that I've used it I haven't come across any game changing flaws. I do like the general layout and functionality, but I'm only using this in a virtual machine. It's not my daily use OS. The updates here have been interesting to follow.
