Windows 10 upgrades won't be free for everyone: Do you qualify?
One question I've been asked more often than any other lately is this: "If I'm running the Windows 10 Preview, do I get a free license when the Preview is over?"
The short answer is no.
The longer answer is "No, but it probably doesn't matter."
Windows licensing is confusing, and Microsoft's muddled messaging about how it's going to deliver Windows 10 upgrades has not helped at all. The Windows 10 license agreements aren't available for inspection yet, so it's possible there will be some surprises in there.

The customary confusion, where would we be without it?
A question I often ask myself about when it comes to Microsoft, Google et al...
"Do they ever put themselves in the actual real world place of a consumer?"

Big promises usually mean confusing execution. One of those mouth in motion before brain engaged kind of things. In any event the initial statement is the one most folks will remember... and may lead to unhappiness later down the road.

The "Get Windows 10" icon has appeared on my taskbar for the first time today.

Testing waters for who might upgrade... and that with the "free" sales pitch to make interest high.
Not a Luddite as I have a dev machine with Win 10 to see the foofafraw... but not satisfied it will run some of my legacy programs (still use Photoshop 5, for example... and that install did not go well under 10, and totally borked by Homesite 4.2).
One of those wait and see... but this announcement to all with Updates active, is a good place for MS to see what the market might bear.
And this "register" for Win 10 Free BS ticks me off on a separate level.... I like to buy my software anonymous... and stay that way until I register it. Call me old school.
win 7 and loving it. Killed Win 8 "features" to workplace correct. Win 10 getting in the way... but actually looking pretty good... just need time and grade and user input (real world, not the hype) before I''ll go down that road.

The "Get Windows 10" icon appeared on my desktop yesterday, too. I clicked it to register my interest, and the icon remains there, too. I would have thought the icon would have disappeared.

I haven't seen the icon at all. Perhaps Classic Shell interferes with it?

Running classic myself. Clicked this thing three times by accident (waiting before replying) and now it has disappeared. Could be it (horrors!) only those who replied first time around get 10 free? :)

I did see a message in the Windows Update after looking for the icon. So I clicked and reserved. Whether I actually do update is another matter.
Of course I have the latest Windows 10 build 10130 on the laptop, but I really can't see much difference between it and Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit.
"The Edge" which is still Project Spartan on the laptop? Ooh! it just loaded a new tab - "Introducing Microsoft Edge". OK I'll try it and see how it wants to fiddle around with my settings.
