Microsoft promises drastic cuts in disk space use for Windows 10

In a blog post published today [blogs.windows.com], Microsoft confirmed that it is actively working on reducing the disk footprint of Windows 10, leaving more space for data. The changes involve compressing Windows system files (an option that was added without explanation in Windows 10 Preview build 9879 and is available in the Disk Cleanup utility in current builds). It also plans a drastic redesign of the way recovery images work.

In the example Microsoft used in today's blog post, the changes would cut the disk footprint for Windows system files by as much as 45 percent.

hard drives are getting bigger not smaller.

It is really kind of silly though... once vista hit with REAL system requirements every one cried about why it was sooo slow on their 700mhz computer with 256 megs of ram. LOL

now every version of windows must run fast on a 486.

This becomes more important when looking at SSDs, not HDDs. Smaller mobile devices, laptops, and some desktops, are resorting to the pricier, smaller capacity SSD. A lot of desktops are being sold with relatively small SSD drives that are used for the OS and Program Files. They're expensive, but provide a real performance boost on startup. Saving space on these smaller drives is where Windows 10 is looking to add some capacity.

I boot from a 250gb SSD and direct all other files (browser cache, etc) to the next hard drive. Knowing how often MS updates Win Anything I am wondering how long it will take to fill the SSD. :)

Win7 64 new install, WinOS footprint 22gb, add office, FF and viruscan and now at 40gb... a few other programs/files I need quick bring total to 65gb ... and this install is only 8 days old! I may have 4tb storage, but only 250gb boot, so any reduction in Windows size would be welcome!

I guess that makes sense now that windows 10 will be one OS for all devices.. phones...computers...tablets...etc
