Upgrading XP Home to XP Pro

Need advice if I can do this upgrade.

I have an HP pavilion a300n computer that came with XP home installed. I now want to upgrade to XP Pro using a microsoft upgrade disc. I was told that because my XP Home system was install on the computer when I bought it and that I don't have a system disk only a recover disk, it could not be upgraded. Is this true? Thanks 1geo.

Previous versions of Windows accept the recovery disk. Some, finding the OEM installation, don't even ask for it. And from what I recall, all upgrades offer to create a roll-back to the previous OS.

It's been awhile, and I'm sorry for the somewhat non-committal answer, but I'd go ahead and try it, myself... unless someone else posts information to the contrary here. Frankly, I suspect an awful lot of "Pro" upgrade disks are used this way, and I'd be surprised if it didn't work.

BTW, is your disk a Service Pack 2 disk, or have they got SP3 disks on the market yet? If not, be ready for the SP3 download... :)

I did this myself a couple of years ago and I didn't have any problems.

I found this on a MS forum ...

[In order to upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional, you must purchase a "retail version" of Windows XP Professional. An OEM version of Windows XP Professional can only be used if you wish to reformat your hard drive and perform a "clean install".]
