Actually why is this morning the update "calling me" to install it if the problem is a known one

Choose between:

Install the update and possibly have affected Realtec hardware for which the control panel isn't working till you install the hotfix (avalable for download in the mean time)

Be exploited when visiting a forum somewhere that got hacked and points you to a ANI file converting your PC into a botnet member and/or stealing your accounts to games such as WoW [And if you read it here you do visit at least one forum...]

Install a third party fix from places such as e-eye and/or ZERT

Seems easy enough a choice to just install the thing.

Microsoft knew about the problem since Dec 20th 2006. And now needs to rush a patch out because it gets widely exploited out there. Perhaps time to re-evaluate your being a customer of the monopolist as well while yoou are at it.

I guess Google searches are exploding for Rthdcpl.exe - I know I did look it up this morning after getting the error :)

I've got to say this is just wrong.

Microsoft reportedly claimed to be working on this bug since December, because the fix was so ingrained with the OS, yet their fix creates a serious new problem? Meanwhile, the third party fix (which I installed earlier) seems to have been hacked out in a very short time - albeit with a disclaimer.

I'm not bashing MS, but I'm losing the faith. I think they have a couple of managers that need to be reassigned to the Help Desk.

Meanwhile, thanks to WebmasterWorld for the heads up. I had the update scheduled for later today.. I think I'll wait. I did run the update yesterday on the XP at the house, but I rarely use that machine. I wonder if they're cussing me over there...

Thanks for the information, I was already downloading Realtek drivers when I noticed this thread.. I installed the hotfix and don't get the error anymore, excellent!

Thanks for posting this... I did the update last night and got the error right away and i get it after every restart.

I will try to run a fix when I get home and I will post back instructions if successful.

So far I haven't noticed it causing any other programs to fail.

Firefox does that even on M$.... although any reason to switch off M$ is a good reason. The only reason I have it at home is it is easy for my girlfriend and my son to use.

Why do these topics alway turn into a Microsoft bashing session? And at least be consistent if you're bashing Microsoft...

We had that this morning as well, and a quick trip to Google and a quick hotfix took care of it.

We think it was Microsoft's way of testing who has a Genuine copy of Windows and who doesn't.

Because you can't download the hotfix unless you go through their certification process!

A quick way for MS to weed out the illegal copies of Vista.

I get automatic updates from them, and there was one this afternoon that seems to have completely fixed the problem.
